Mankin Finance director Michael Mankin has been named an Excellence Awardee at the 2026 Australian Mortgage Awards - not in one category, but two.
The nominations, announced by the Australian Mortgage Awards and published on the official awardees list, recognise Michael's performance across the Equity-One Broker of the Year – Productivity category and the Pepper Money Broker of the Year – Specialist Lending category. Both are among the most competitive nominations in the industry's annual awards program.
The Australian Mortgage Awards (AMAs) have been the industry's benchmark for excellence since their inception, drawing entries from brokers, lenders, and aggregators across the country. An Excellence Awardee designation means a broker has been assessed and shortlisted among the top performers nationally in their nominated category - not a participation recognition, but a merit-based shortlist determined by the awards panel.
The Productivity category assesses loan volume, client throughput, and operational efficiency - rewarding brokers who have built systems and a team structure that allow them to serve more clients without sacrificing service quality. The Specialist Lending category is one of the most technically demanding, recognising brokers who consistently place complex and non-conforming loans: self-employed borrowers with non-standard financials, clients with credit impairment, construction scenarios, and cases that require genuine lender knowledge beyond vanilla serviceability.
Being recognised across both Productivity and Specialist Lending in the same year is uncommon. The two categories measure different things - volume and efficiency on one side, technical complexity and problem-solving on the other - and brokers who excel in both are typically building a practice that can handle a wide range of client situations at genuine scale.
For clients in south-west Sydney and the Macarthur region, that breadth matters. The corridor from Oran Park through Gregory Hills, Leppington, and Edmondson Park has one of the most diverse borrower profiles in metropolitan Sydney: first home buyers using government guarantees, tradespeople and self-employed business owners, medical and legal professionals seeking LMI waivers, and investors building portfolios across multiple properties. Not every brokerage can handle all of those scenarios well.
On the nominations
"Being shortlisted in both categories reflects the kind of practice we have built at Mankin Finance - one that can write straightforward first home buyer loans and complex specialist scenarios with the same attention to detail. The recognition is for the whole team."
- Michael Mankin, Director, Mankin Finance
Specialist lending is a term that gets used loosely, but in the context of the AMAs it has a specific meaning: scenarios that require lenders outside the major banks, or major bank solutions that require detailed submission work to get approved. Common examples include:
The Pepper Money sponsorship of the Specialist Lending category is itself a signal - Pepper is one of the primary non-bank lenders in the specialist space and works primarily through the broker channel.
The 2026 Australian Mortgage Awards ceremony will determine the category winners from the Excellence Awardee shortlists. The full list of awardees across all categories is available at australianmortgageawards.com.au.
Mankin Finance's previous industry recognition includes the YBR Group Rising Star Award and a number of aggregator-level performance acknowledgements. These 2026 AMA nominations represent the first time Michael has been shortlisted nationally across multiple categories in a single year.
The Australian Mortgage Awards (AMAs) are the industry's most recognised annual awards program, honouring outstanding performance across broking, lending, and aggregation. The Excellence Awardee designation recognises brokers who have been shortlisted as finalists across their nominated categories, assessed by an independent judging panel.
The Pepper Money Broker of the Year – Specialist Lending award recognises brokers who demonstrate exceptional skill in complex and non-conforming loan scenarios, including self-employed borrowers, credit-impaired clients, and cases outside standard lender policy. It is one of the more technically demanding categories in the AMAs and reflects lender-panel breadth and submission quality, not just volume.
